Notes worth keeping
Questions from the Session
Short answers to help the next conversation start in a useful place.
When should a composer join an indie game project?
Bring a composer into the conversation when there is enough gameplay intent to discuss a representative scene, before the entire content schedule is locked. A small paid prototype can test the relationship and musical direction without committing to a full score.
Do we need audio middleware?
Not automatically. Native engine audio may be sufficient for a few loops and simple transitions. Compare the required authoring workflow, interactive behaviours, licensing and maintenance work before adding middleware.
How many stems should a cue have?
Use the smallest number that creates the intended changes. Every additional independently controlled layer adds mixing, synchronisation, memory and testing considerations. Test all valid combinations.
How long should a music loop be?
There is no universal duration. Consider expected player dwell time, musical density and variation. A longer loop can still become tiring, while a sparse short loop may work well with rests or alternatives.
What loudness should game music target?
Agree a project reference and test it in gameplay. Loudness measurements help consistency, but broadcast and streaming targets are not universal game requirements. Leave headroom and protect important dialogue and effects.
Is a per-minute quote enough to define the budget?
No. Include adaptive layers, transitions, recording, revisions, integration and testing. A short interactive cue can take more work than a longer linear track. Write down the assumptions behind the estimate.
Does paying for music transfer copyright?
Do not assume it does. Ownership and permitted uses depend on the agreement and applicable law. Distinguish the composition from the recording, and get qualified advice about licences or assignments.
Can we use a commercial song as a temporary reference?
A reference is not permission to distribute a song. Do not place uncleared music in a public build or trailer. Explain the qualities you want to discuss and replace temporary assets before external distribution.
What belongs in the final music delivery?
Include approved audio, a file manifest, loop and transition notes, agreed stems or source sessions, credit details and relevant permissions. Identify versions and any known implementation issues.
Does the session-note tool send my question?
No. It builds a plain-text note in your browser. You can copy or download it and decide separately whether to email it. The tool does not submit the form or store your message in local storage.
